About Tags

This is a detailed manual for the official tags and what they mean.

While tag creation is unmoderated, you should only use this privilege to create new tags of the following sort:
- "subject: character: [charactername]"
- "topic: [topicname]"
- "author: [authorname]"
Any other tags you use should be these pre-existing standard ones. In the event that you are confused or believe your post does not fall under the existing categories, please see the section about IDK tags.

Type Tags
"Type" tags describe what kind of post this is. All posts should be tagged with at least one type.

Posts may fall under multiple categories and be tagged accordingly. For example, a post may discuss the habits of existing reptiles and then use that to say something about wyverns as a species. Such a post should be tagged with both "type: reference" and "type: building".

A description of each type follows.

type: reference - This tag is for posts whose primary purpose is information. One example would be a post that gives a table listing the immediate family of each FE lord and whether they are dead or alive. Another kind might be an overview of starter cavaliers and their personalities. Posts describing real-world situations relevant to Fire Emblem, such as basics of medieval life, how to fight with a lance, or war horse use and maintenance, should also be filed under this category.

type: theory - This tag is for posts that make a hypothesis based on evidence from canon. They often seek to explain why something in the game is what it is or to reconcile apparent contradictions. Theories should be supported with evidence from the games and other official sources. Some theories may be easier to support than others, but regardless of the volume to be found, in general this category expects careful attention to justification/evidence in the author's procedure.

type: problem-raising - This tag is for posts that begin to raise questions and highlight unexplored territory, but for whatever reason is not a theory (either because it doesn't answer those questions, or because the problem is not one that you would solve by developing a theory). For example, a post highlighting the differences in Lyon's characterization in either route would fall under this category.

type: building - This tag is for posts that focus on fleshing out unexplored territory in the game. It covers worldbuilding as well as development of extremely minor characters such as Silk in FE2, Vika in FE10, and so on. The key difference between "building" and a "theory" is that a building post admits that canon gives little evidence on the matter, and attempts to extrapolate based on parallels to real world situations and other elements present in the game. A theory is to be believed or disbelieved; a blankbuild is merely found fitting or ill-fitting. The difference is somewhat intuitive but I believe it exists. When in doubt, peruse existing posts classified as either one. If still in doubt, feel free to tag with both "type: theory" and "type: building" or tag as "type: idk".

type: for fun - Somewhat self-explanatory, but not. This is the conventional "crack theory" category, in which you might speculate that Mark the Tactician is in fact Innes in a green cloak, or that the Whitewings in fact have the dynamics of a Mahou Shoujo group. Please note that "type: for fun" posts should still be of interest to strangers, generally because these apparently absurd claims do make some sort of sense and can find some apparent "evidence".

type: essay - [Formerly the "persuasive" tag.] This tag is for posts that revolve around an expression of opinion. Persuasive posts would be counted under this tag, for example, an argument for why Eliwood/Fiora should not automatically ignored as a canonical option, or how Crimea actually holds a rather disparaging attitude toward the laguz. Some other articles, such as an interpretation of game events too personal to be a "reference" but too direct to be a "theory," should also be placed under this tag. Although this type of post is fundamentally opinionated, posts in this category should still attempt to speak to a broader audience, including evidence where necessary. Additionally, these posts should always argue about the topic -- prevailing attitudes are fine to mention, and examples of fandom activity may be necessary, but the character of the people themselves should never be the subject of discussion. Comments and so on will not be policed, but the post itself must not be ad hominem.

World Tags

"World" tags denote what game world the post is concerned with. All posts should be tagged with at least one world. Please do not create new "world" tags without consulting a moderator.

world: archanea/valencia, world: jugdral, world: elibe, world: magvel, world: tellius, world: ylisse - These tags are self-explanatory. Please use them only if the world or its constituents are a major topic within your post. For example, if your post is mainly about the laguz but you also make brief references to manaketes when discussing the dragon tribes, this should only be marked as world: tellius. You do not need to warn for spoilers for any world you have tagged the post with. Similarly, as a reader you should be aware that any post marked with a world tag may contain spoilers for that world.

world: cross-series - This tag is for posts that focus on the series as a whole. Generally speaking, these posts discuss series trends. For example, posts comparing the lords of each game might fall under this category. Posts that are not specific to a character or world also fall under this tag by default.

world: unorthodox - This tag is for the Tear Ring Saga and other similar situations, where worlds are not strictly official Fire Emblem worlds but are related on a very deep level. Materials that are Nintendo-endorsed but not within the official world continuities, such as the Smash games and SMT x FE, are also covered under this tag. This tag is not for Fire Emblem based fan-created worlds.

Subject Tags

"Subject" tags are for, well, what the post is about. You may create subject tags for your post as you feel is appropriate. However, please first make sure that a fitting tag does not already exist. Feel free to use multiple subject tags.

subject: main story - This tag is for posts that concern the main plotline. For example, the article may discuss differences between Eirika's and Ephraim's route in FE8, or speculate what the main villains were doing during such-and-such chapter while canon was silent on their activities.

subject: canon - For non-reference posts, this tag is for posts that concern the nature of canon itself. For example, these posts may try to reconcile differences in the FE4 and FE5 timeline, or conflicting information from artbooks, etc. Issues of differences between different language versions or remakes of a game also fall under this category. "type: reference" posts bearing this tag are resources compiled directly from canon -- for example, charts with canon quotes, or translations.

subject: world - This tag is for posts that concern the workings of the FE universes, whether it is about natural law, history, society, or anything else. This topic covers everything from speculation about the anatomy of pegasi to the campaign of the original Crusaders of Jugdral. Some topics, like attempts to reconstruct the timeline of events around the Serenes Massacre, may be deeply tied to the main story as well, and of course you are welcome to tag those articles with both.

subject: characters - This tag is for any post that focuses on a character or group of characters. If the post gives a lot of attention to specific character(s), please also tag with "subject: characters: [charactername]" (for example, "subject: characters: soren"). Please do not use these tags for brief mentions of characters, or if these characters are only narrowly discussed in relation to the topic. (Eg, A discussion of all the FE lords and their romances should not be tagged with "subject: characters: ephraim".)

A note about creating new character tags - Please check to make sure that a tag doesn't already exist under a different spelling (eg, "subject: characters: rei" when you're thinking of tagging lleu). In the event that different characters share the same official name, the more prominent character should be prioritized and the others disambiguated. For example, if I wanted to write about Vanessa's pegasus, I should tag that with "subject: characters: titania (pegasus)". If you can avoid these situations with a different choice of name, please do so (eg, "subject: characters: leen" instead of Lyn or Lynn). Characters who make multiple appearances should all be filed under the same character tag unless their appearances are so different that their status as "the same character" is dubious (eg, "subject: characters: anna (cross-series)" vs "subject: characters: anna (ylisse)"). Nameable characters should be filed under their default name with their role in parentheses (eg, "subject: characters: chris (myunit)").

subject: gameplay - This tag is for posts that concern the gameplay of Fire Emblem. A pure example would be, of course, a post about gameplay itself. As an example crossing over with "subject: characters", this would fit a post about how in-game stats correlate to characterization.

subject: literary - This tag is for posts that analyze Fire Emblem and its elements as parts of an artistic work. Examples might include posts about the moral paradigms of different Fire Emblem games, about the way different games handle storytelling through the overworld map sprites, or the "Fire Emblem" motif itself.

subject: fandom - This tag is for posts that focus on fandom or fandom phenomena. Discussions of fanon naturally fall under this category, such as posts analyzing why a character might be portrayed as more powerless than he is within fandom. The caveat outlined under "type: persuasive" also applies here.

Topic Tags

topic: [topic name] - The specific main idea of your post, if not already covered by a world/character. Examples may include the Branded, Velthomer, social issues, etc. Feel free to create these tags as desired, but remember that tags are more useful when they can apply to more than one post. You do not have to list a topic if you feel that your post is adequately covered by the other tags.

Author Tags

Please tag the post with "author: [authorname]". For authors with multiple names, standardize all posts by one author to one name. If you are posting on behalf of someone else, please respect their naming preference if they have one. If the author of the posts changes his/her name and wishes for old [community profile] emblemology listings to be changed to the new name, please contact a moderator with this request.

IDK Tags

For any tag category (type, world, subject, author), you may tag your post with "[tagtype]: idk" (eg, "type: idk") if you really have no idea how to categorize it, and a moderator will assign a tag to the post for you. Please make a good faith effort to categorize your post on your own first.

If you feel like a new type, world, or subject tag should be created and standardized, please leave a few remarks about that at the bottom of your post.

The !my best work Tag

You may use this tag on posts that you feel like are particularly good. Putting this tag on something is the equivalent of saying, "If you're only going to read one or two of my posts, please read this one." You may use this as often as you feel is tasteful.

Other Remarks about Tags

Please do not make joke tags. Not even on April 1st. The tag list is vital for finding anything and it's important to keep that streamlined. Even if a tag is subsequently removed from all posts, any tag that has ever existed will still exist for the moderators and must be pruned by hand if we want to stay sane.

It is my hope that you will all be excellent taggers and that I will not even have to invent moderation policies over tags.
